Our History

Fuhrmann Driving Academy was founded in 2007 to provide new drivers safe and professional driving instruction throughout Hampton Roads. Serving hundreds of students each year, our fully licensed driving school is trusted by adults and teenagers alike to provide a patient, courteous and informed driving experience.
Driving is a serious activity that demands responsibility, know-how, and attentiveness, and we take pride in the quality drivers educated by our school. Fortunately, our instructors are skilled in helping even the most nervous of drivers get over their stress and discomfort.
Please feel comfortable to give us a call or send us an email if you would like to learn more about our driver’s education services. We look forward to hearing from you!
Our Mission

To provide a professional and comfortable environment that turns novice and inexperienced drivers into safe, responsible and confident drivers. To bring about awareness of the consequences to the choices and actions drivers make when behind the wheel of a vehicle. Some of which can be deadly.
The Process to Procure Virginia License

First
15 and a half is the required age to take the driving permit test. You can only take this test at the DMV. It consists of 10 questions on signs and 30 questions on general knowledge. You must get all 10 sign questions correct to move on to the general knowledge section. You must get at least 24 of the 30 general knowledge questions correct to receive your permit.
Second
There are 2 requirements that must be completed in order to receive your license. The classroom portion and the behind the wheel portion.
Third
The classroom portion is provided through the public schools to 10th grade students as part of their P.E. curriculum. Private school and homeschool students can complete this classroom portion online through Fuhrmann Driving Academy. We also offer in person classes at private schools during the summer. This schedule will be posted on our Events page when available.
Fourth
The behind the wheel portion begins after the classroom portion is completed and students have driven at least 20-25 hours with a parent. Parents will be signing off that their child has driven at least 45 hours with them. 15 of those hours need to be at night. After completing the behind the wheel portion, students will be given their temporary license. You do not have to go to the DMV for the road test. Our driving school offers this service at the end of the behind the wheel sessions.
Fifth
The temporary license has an eligibility date of 9 months from the day the permit is received. On that day, you may start driving on your own. The permanent license will be mailed to the student from their city of residence. This can take up to 6 months.
